Since 1996 the Road Safety Task Force, and from 2010 the Road Safety Advisory Council, has worked, through the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources, with Tasmania Police to deliver a co-ordinated road safety response with mass media advertising supporting police operations. There were 64 road crash fatalities in 1996 and 24 in 2011.

The work of police is supplemented at peak traffic periods – Easter, long weekends and Christmas – with state-wide highly targeted operations suuported by advertising.

Tasmania Police’s current priorities include:

  • Being seen on highways and arterial roads
  • High-risk driver behaviours
  • Use of equipment to deter unsafe driving
